Rive Sarfstein, Ph.D., Research Associate and Laboratory Manager

Rive received her B.Sc. degree in Biological Sciences at the Centro de Ciencias Biologicas, Universidade Federal de Pernambuco (UFPE), Brazil, and a Teaching Degree (Biological Sciences) at the Centro Educacao, UFPE. Her M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees were awarded by the Weizmann Institute of Science, Rehovot. Her M.Sc. thesis focused on the characterization of monoclonal antibodies against Leishmania tropica and parasite exometabolites. Her Ph.D. thesis was entitled Isolation and Characterization of the antigenic site of two proteins important in the diagnosis of visceral leishmaniasis. Rive performed her postdoctoral training at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and Hadassah Medical School in the area of Leishmania research. Since 2003 Rive serves as a Research Associate and Laboratory Manager. Rive’s work has been centered on the identification and characterization of IGF1R promoter binding proteins from breast cancer cells. Rive discovered that IGF1R translocates to nucleus and autoregulates IGF1R gene expression. Furthermore, she showed that also the insulin receptor regulates IGF1R gene expression. This project was awarded a prize to the best Basic Research Project by the Israel Endocrine Society at the 2011 Annual Meeting. In addition, Rive evaluated the effects of various drugs and biological therapies on endometrium cancer cells, including vorinostat (an histone deacetylase inhibitor), metformin (an antidiabetic drug), methyl jasmonate (a plant-derived cytotoxic agent), cisplatin and NVP-AEW-541 (an IGF1 tyrosine kinase inhibitor). Her project on metformin’s mode of action was awarded a prize by the Israel Society of Gynecologic Oncology in 2012. Currently, Rive’s project is focused on the identification of insulin receptor promoter-binding transcription factors in estrogen receptor-positive and negative breast cancer cells. Her work uses several approaches, including immunological, biochemical, molecular and bioinformatic tools.
